Eric Cantona spoke about the connection between football and politics.


The former Manchester United and France striker shared his thoughts ahead of the opening of an exhibition of paintings he curated that explores the connection between sport and society.


Football has always been used by politics and I have always been interested in this topic. When South Africa was apartheid, people didn`t want to play there. Now things seem to be different.


Now we can`t find anyone who wants to fight. The big [football] organizations don`t do much about human rights. Instead of using their power, they go where the money is.


Football is very popular, very strong, and we could use that to change things instead of being puppets of politicians. The athletes depicted in these paintings took risks. Some of them may have been killed. They didn`t just speak out in the newspapers, " said Cantona.
