Red Bull has confirmed that it will be working on a new wind tunnel.


The investment was approved by co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz, one of his last decisions regarding the team, said team leader Christian Horner. Mateschitz passed away in October.


When the new rules for working in the wind tunnel were introduced, it became clear that the efficiency of our equipment is simply incomparable with the direction in which the rules are moving. Therefore, we were forced to make large investments.


If you look at how the world is developing, now computer simulations are playing an increasingly important role. We had to act bold enough to abandon wind tunnels for the future. But, unfortunately, [in Formula 1] there is a culture of fear, not a culture of acceptance, " explained Horner.


Horner and the head of the design bureau of Red Bull, Adrian Newey, advocated the complete elimination of F-1 from wind tunnels. At the moment, the team is working with equipment inherited from the Arrows team, which completed performances in 2002.


Team advisor Helmut Marko said the new wind tunnel would probably be operational in two to three years.
