The head of the team`s design bureau studied the ground effect in his youth, so the problems of the new generation of machines - in particular, galloping - did not come as a surprise.
I studied ground effect aerodynamics, and applying it to sports cars was my final forecast by buy soccer predictions student project. After updates implemented on the last day of testing in Bahrain, the problem was contained to the point where it was no longer a nuisance.
The problem with ground effect is that you have to fly at the limit of aerodynamic stability. If you cross the line, jumps begin. It is not easy to find a compromise between downforce and bouncing. Our first version was not stable enough.
F-1 cars require a huge amount of compromise. The trick is to find the best combination of ground clearance, downforce and allowable bounce. Of course, 40 years ago we did not have such tools for simulations, we relied more on our own understanding. On the other hand, the rules allowed for more freedom. At the time, skirts and duct design under the car were the most effective ways to solve the problem, " Newey explained.
